What do you do for a living?

On meeting someone often before anything else I get asked this Q. I don't really like it as assumptions and judgements are often made on me before they have gotten to know the really important traits such as: how I treat others, how much I love myself and about the experiences I have had which have led me to be standing here with you in this beautiful encounter. And of all the questions we could ask why this one?
From what I understand the culture we live in is all about what we can get from life. How much money we can earn, how beautiful our lovers are, the most luxurious holidays, big houses, flash cars and keeping lots of friends. I think sometimes when we meet someone new subconsciously we are comparing ourselves with them and making judgements to gage if we'll befriend, work, sleep with or dismiss this person we have just met. I believe this is how our mind works..making comparisons, weighing up many factors and coming up with a conclusion. This is the job of our mind. The mind can be a beautiful gift or not. The problem comes from deep imbedded imposed beliefs that may be running our lives.
It's in our conditioning to be constantly thinking about what we can get from life. We have ambitions, goals and dreams and in my experience this can (but not always :) be a distraction. You may miss out on whats happening right NOW. When you judge life and success on how much you have and your status you are likely to compare yourself with others based on these material things.
BUT ARE THESE THE THINGS THAT DEFINE WHO WE ARE. DOES HAVING A BIG HOUSE MEAN WE HAVE A BIG HEART? DOES HAVING NO MONEY MEAN WE ARE WORTHLESS? DO WE HAVE TO WORK REALLY REALLY HARD TO BE HAPPY? IN MY OPINION AND EXPERIENCE NO!
When you are in tune with life's flow you realise you are but a wave in the ocean. You will experience, enjoy and have a full and beautiful life without trying. You may get a great job, a lovely partner and feel happy without even trying! How? by just by surrendering to life
What does that mean?! realise you are part of something magnificent, a wave in the ocean. To go with the flow means to trust the ocean and let it guide you. Realise you are part of it but you are not the boss. No one is! Reslise this deeply and you no longer have to burden yourself with trying so hard to control your life.
We are all a part of this flow and therefore we are all as important as each other so when I get the sense someone is looking up to me (seeing themselves as inferior) or look down on me (seeing themselves as superior) or when I notice myself doing this to others I feel uncomfortable.
So the question what do you do.. is it that bad?
I must try and clarify the point I'm trying to make there's nothing wrong with the question in itself. The problem is the way that we are made to believe that what we do for a living defines who we are. So subconsciously we will react to this person based on our beliefs. To look into this more think about how you would act around/towards a King and a homeless person. Would there be a difference? When you start to see people as they are without their stories about what they do you really see them and what's in their hearts. Once we have realised that we are all perfect and beautiful and as important as each other the question takes on a new meaning. We are just interested and I am cool with that :)
